STATEMENT 1

Should you "buy globally" or "buy locally", considering the environmental impact of the transport industry? Give a statement and give reasons for your opinion. You can refer to and comment on what the other members of your group say.

  1. In my opinion it should be a mixture of both, because we should support the local companys and farmers in order to get good quality, altough it's a little bit more expensive most of the time.
But we can't only buy locally because then we wouldn't be able to eat things like bananas or drink a cup of coffee. So finally it is important to find a good mixture of global and local buying.

  2. I don´t agree with you. It´s right that you say we should support the local companies but we shouldn´t buy anymore global. Importing things from countries who are far away is very bad for the enivronment. The pollution of the vehicles that transport the goods is very high. Perhaps we would have to abstain from some things but in my opinion it´s better than a fully destroyed environment.

  3. I think your statement is right and it is important to protect the environment, but it is simply impossible to stop buying globally. Our economy is based on a worldwide globalized connection and the whole thing wouldn't work if we only buy locally. You can't imagine how much we need global trading...
For example the zugar cane, wich comes from kuba and is needed to produce sugar. Or if you look at the coffee wich comes from Brazil. Did you know, that germany is the second biggest coffee importer in the world, after america? A normal germany drinks about 146 litres of coffee every year, that's even more than the average beer consumption!(about 112 litres a year)
So all in all you can see how important global trading is, even if it has some negative sides.

  4. Yes you´re right, without trading all over the world we wouldn´t have many things. But in my last sentence I said we should better abstain from some things. Sure, goods like coffee are very important, but who needs for example in the winter apples from New Zealand ore strawberries from Morocco? So some things are necessary, but not all things.

  5. Ok. we can agree on that point because i also think that we shouldn't buy strawberries in the winter.

  6. The problems with buying product that are strictly local is that like niko said, you can't get a very wide range of the products you consume on a daily basis. Most clothing is made in a different country and while I don't like wearing clothes, most societies require them to be in public. It’s the same with foods. Not all countries can grow all vegetables and fruits and that’s why we import things from other countries. As great as it would be to have a country that is self reliant, it just doesn't work that way. No climate can support all the people living within it.

  7. A thought about the environment: Yes we are as a planet killing it slowly, but ever couple hundred years or so, the earth essentially rejuvenates itself. It replenishes some of its resources and its gases that are necessary for it to survive. It’s as if the earth is breathing. It takes in the pollutants for so long then exhales and revives itself. You can’t deprive yourself of the foods you need to stay alive just to save the environment which will save itself. That’s really redundant.

  8. I agree with everybody in a way but what about the immagrants that move here and need to buy something you don't usually get in the US or Germany or a different country. Its good to buy from both local and global but at the same time it can cause problems for either one.

  9. Miss Cindy i agree with you but what if the ozone layer gets completley destroted and we shrivle up and die? pollution is begening to destroy alot of the beautiful things we do have on this earth and it could be from globalization and companies and many other things

  10. I agree with everybody up there. I think its good to buy from both local and global, because we always look for something new and try to keep up with other countries.

  11. Put simply, buy locally what is a better deal, and buy globally what you cannot obtain locally. Sure, it will not be balanced, but consumers don't care about where they buy from usually, just if they can save money.
